About the Festival

The Bonokyempem Youth Festival is an annual celebration that showcases the vibrant culture, traditions, and heritage of the Bono Tribe (the first Akan inhabitants of present day Ghana).

This initiative seeks to bring indigenes of the Bono land both at home and in the diaspora for a week-long celebration of heritage, development and community impact. The festive period seeks to rekindle a strong sense of identity and togetherness, promote local commerce, support social interventions, and create memories through shared activities rooted in culture and progress.

The festival also seeks to celebrate and promote our cultural values, foster unity through a series of events including traditional dances challenge, Queen mothers dressing competition, music performances, art exhibitions, and educational workshops. It will be a tool to reconnect the younger generation with their rich cultural roots while creating opportunities for economic development through local commerce and cultural exchange.

The festival also serves as a platform for addressing contemporary issues facing the youth while drawing wisdom from old traditional values and practices.

Background & Rationale

Preserving Our Heritage for Future Generations

The Bonokyempem Youth Festival was conceived in response to growing concerns about the erosion of cultural identity among the youth in the Bono land. This event has been established since 2020 and is currently organised by Luckx Group of Companies in partnership with Techiman Youth Association and Bonokyempem Association.

The festival draws inspiration from various traditional Bono festivals that have been celebrated for centuries, adapting them to contemporary contexts while maintaining their cultural essence. It serves as a bridge between generations, allowing elders to pass on knowledge and traditions to the youth.

Through this festival, we aim to create a sustainable platform for cultural preservation that also addresses contemporary challenges facing the youth, including unemployment, educational mentorship and social integration.

Historical Context

The Bono people, one of the major Akan groups in Ghana, have a rich history dating back to the 11th century with the establishment of the Bono State. This festival honors that legacy while creating new traditions for the modern era.

Cultural Significance

Bonokyempem represents more than just a festival - it's a movement to reclaim cultural identity, promote unity, and inspire the next generation of Bono leaders and innovators.

Festival Theme

"Bringing it Home - Celebrating Our Roots, Culture and Progress"

The core idea, "Bringing it Home," emphasizes that heritage is not a passive relic but a living reality that the youth must actively claim, understand and integrate into modern practice.

This sets the stage for a tripartite journey: celebrating "Roots", grounding the youth in their history and ancestry, providing a foundational sense of belonging and a moral compass from the wisdom of the past.

"Culture" as the vibrant, living expression of those roots through language, arts, food, inter-marriages, chieftancy cohesion and communal values.

Finally, it culminates in "Progress," empowering the youth to channel their heritage into future innovation and achievement. Ultimately, the theme is a cohesive mandate, arguing that a deep knowledge of the past and proud engagement with present culture provides the unique strength needed to confidently build a prosperous and dynamic future.
